Understanding interaction quality in the real world

How can we estimate the quality of a conversation between people and a robot outside the laboratory? We study third-party-rated rapport in 62 robot–customer interaction sessions recorded in a Japanese drugstore.

We compare zero-shot language models, pretrained text, audio and visual models, and prediction-level fusion. Combining Gemini 2.5 Flash text predictions with HuBERT audio and V-JEPA visual predictions performs best overall. Performance also varies with interaction duration and group size.

Line plot of CCC for each prediction model across one-, two-, and three-person interactions. Gemini 2.5 Flash (T) stays relatively high across group sizes, while V-JEPA (V) declines as the number of participants increases.
